Without wasting much of your time, let's move to the next section where I discuss my tips in detail.
Best tips to keep your money safe
Here are some of my tips for keeping money safe while backpacking. Although some of them might feel a little unconventional, they are effective.
Avoid keeping your all your cash together
I call this tip my 'golden rule of backpacking.' I always try to keep my money in the different bags I carried and in my pockets too. As much as possible you should avoid situations that require you to bring out large amounts of cash as you never know who might be watching. Try keeping change which you might need more frequently in your pockets while keeping the rest safely in different bags. If you need to restock your pocket cash, do in a place with fewer eyes.
Be attentive
Always be vigilant! Watch your bags like a hawk. Even when you're on buses or trains. Have your luggage close to you or in your direct line of sight so you can always account for it. Avoid leaving your bags unattended even when you need to use the restrooms. I am in the habit of always having my bags with me when I can help it. If I can't, I make sure I am as close to the baggage compartment as I can be.
Lock your bag
This sounds like a no brainer but you would be mightily surprised at the number of people who do not have the habit of locking their bags. Invest in light but secure padlocks and keep the key on you at all times. It is a simple but highly effective measure. It would definitely protect you from pickpockets as it makes it harder for your bag to be unzipped without your knowledge.
Use hiding places
This may sound silly but I have found it to be very useful for me. Keeping money inside my shoes, belt buckles and other unconventional hiding spots have been very effective in protecting my money. It would surely be of help if your bag is ever burgled as mine has on a few occasions you would understand what I mean. I started using this after I had a couple of incidents but I'm putting this on the list because prevention is always better.
Have alternatives
As much as this article is about keeping money safe, it is important to have backups. Having one or two bank cards as backups to your cash is never a bad idea. Ensure you always have money in your bank accounts when traveling. This would keep you prepared and prevent any bad experiences like getting stranded in throat bizarre places. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience.
